What is the Nayee Zindagi Program?
The Nayee Zindagi Program, meaning New Life Program. It is a holistic support system for survivors of acid attacks. The Punjab Social Protection Authority PSPA initiated the program because acid violence is not only a crime, but it can totally disrupt any sense of life and change the victim’s mental and emotional well-being.
This government initiative offers victims free reconstructive surgeries, psychological therapy and counseling, legal support, vocational and employment training support, and interest-free loans, and it aims to have survivors recover physically, emotionally, and financially with a plan to achieve their futures.
The PSPA is working with the Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education Department to ensure that all medical treatments, as well as any number of surgeries, are free of charge to the victim.
Acid Violence: An Embedded, Present Crisis
Acid attacks constitute one of the most barbaric forms of violence, predominantly against women. They frequently stem from personal grievances such as rejection of proposals or revenge. Survivors suffer horrific burns, disfigurement, and meaningful disability. Such injury is permanent, and the psychological effects and trauma are likewise permanent.
Survivors frequently confront not merely medical injury but also the social stigma and isolation, mostly because of the survivors’ isolation from their families and communities. Many suffer what could be labeled as a social death. Clearly, survivors also face economic hardship and the possibility of being exploited for financial gain. As they cope with medical treatment and rehabilitation, survivors face obstacles such as access to health care, navigating the legal system, and barriers to being able to financially support themselves.

Objectives of the program
The Nayee Zindagi Program is a government program aimed at equipping acid attack survivors with a holistic outcome. It guarantees free medical treatment for survivors, including reconstructive surgery, psychological counseling, and assists survivors with the protection of their social rights. The Nayee Zindagi Program’s objective is to protect acid attack survivors from social exclusion by offering the survivors empowerment through skill training and interest-free loans through micro financiers to generate income and live with dignity.

Once they establish the incident has taken place through a copy of the FIR or the CNIC issued by the country, they are registered on behalf of the Punjab Social Protection Authority PSPA.
Medical Assessment and Treatment
Survivors of acid violence undergo a comprehensive medical assessment and, depending on the injuries they have sustained, receive free reconstructive surgeries. This involves the treatment of the specific injuries with procedures like plastic surgery, skin grafting, eye surgery, facial pain relief procedures, physiotherapy, etc.
Psychological Support
The process of healing also includes a concerted effort to offer survivors emotional support.
Victims receive individual counseling, professional counseling offered in groups voluntarily, and victim support groups that create a safe space for victims to share their stories and provide strength to one another.
Legal Assistance
The PSPA also provides free, where available, legal aid to victims who want to file cases against offenders, obtain justice, and know their rights.
Legal representation is important for victims as attorneys can provide information and guide survivors through the court processes associated with compensation claims, limiting the burden of these matters on already traumatized and injured victims.
